Remember serendipity? In 2015, I started noticing that people were simultaneously posting the same things, complementary things, or directly opposing things on Instagram.
It was like, without knowing it, people all over the world were having concurrent one-sided conversations—some with friends, some with strangers, most with people somewhere on that spectrum—about the same thing. Sure, there were the usual coincidental flowers and #foodporn, but there were also funny takes on birds, eye exam selfies, and museums posting similar paintings. At exactly the same time.
I collected these images through 2016 (and some beyond), but it lost its draw when pure, unadulterated coincidence was replaced by The Algorithm. Here is my temple to coincidence and the hive mind.
